In 1875, a railway line whispered to life in the Kumeu–Riverhead Section. This line was a vital part of the grand Kaipara-Riverhead Railway, a 25 km stretch of track designed to connect the Waitematā Harbour at Riverhead with the Kaipara Harbour at Helensville South. The Kumeu–Riverhead Section was a crucial link in this chain. It promised easier travel between Auckland and its northern districts, and a brighter future for the Kaipara timber industry. Imagine the excitement as the first train chugged along the Kumeu–Riverhead Section, a symbol of progress in a still-developing New Zealand. The Kumeu–Riverhead Section was a short but important railway line. It was a key piece of the larger Kaipara-Riverhead Railway puzzle. For almost six years, this section facilitated trade and transport. However, it had no intermediate stations, its journey focused solely on connecting the two key harbors. The construction of the North Auckland Line in 1881 changed everything for the Kumeu–Riverhead Section. This new line reached Kumeū from Auckland, offering a faster, more efficient route. The Kumeu–Riverhead Section, briefly becoming the Riverhead branch, was deemed redundant. Just a week later, it closed, its short chapter in history coming to an abrupt end. Despite its closure in 1881, the Kumeu–Riverhead Section left its mark on the landscape. Today, almost a century and a half later, ghostly reminders of the railway still exist. Near the Kumeu River Number 1 bridge, you can see the embankment where the line diverged from the North Auckland Line. Old Railway Road follows the line’s formation. At its T-intersection with the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway, the road ends but the railway formation continues, a silent testament to the Kumeu–Riverhead Section’s brief but impactful existence.
