Did you know that Croydon South’s origins are tied to a progress association? In 1959, the Cheong Park progress association formed. It aimed to promote South Croydon. Urbanization initially centered around the corner of Bayswater and Eastfield Roads. Taralla Creek flows from Croydon’s parklands through Croydon South to Dandenong Creek.
Imagine the excitement when Croydon South Post Office first opened in 1961. It was located in a mixed business. Seven years later, The Mall shops opened. They were just across Bayswater Road. Later, another row of shops appeared at the Olympus Heights estate on the suburb’s eastern side.
Consider the families who flocked to Croydon South in the 1960s. A primary school opened in 1967. Within five years, enrolment soared to 770 students. Many children came from families from England. Their parents worked at British Nylon Spinners in nearby Bayswater North. Croydon South Primary School was built in 1967. In 2009, Croydon South Primary School closed due to falling enrolments. It merged with Tinternvale Primary School.
Eastfield Shopping Centre stands on the corner of Eastfield and Bayswater Roads. Merrindale Shopping Centre lies on Dorset Road.
Perhaps you’re a sports enthusiast? The South Croydon Bulldogs are the local Australian Rules football team. They clinched the 2017 Division One premiership in the Eastern Football League. Croydon South boasts two cricket teams. South Croydon is based at Cheong Park. Eastfield is based at Benson Oval. Both compete in the Ringwood District Cricket Association. The South Croydon Youth Club Scorpions basketball club operates at Cheong Park. It offers basketball to local youth aged 6 to 18. Eastfield Park is home to the Mountain District Horse and Pony Club. It is the oldest pony club in Victoria and now Australia.
Croydon South is close to the foothills of Mount Dandenong. It is also near the Dandenong Ranges.
