In 1938 the Katharineum rowing section joined the Lubecker Ruderklub. This protected the group from being taken over by the Marine-Hitler-Jugend. The club maintained its democratic structure even during the Third Reich.
Later the Lubeck Model was created. It was a training association between the Lubecker Ruderklub and Katharineum. This allowed students to train at the club. They achieved success in major regattas. The Lubeck Model became well-known throughout Germany.
The Lubecker Ruderklub is traditionally a men’s club. However it works closely with the Lubecker Frauen Ruder-Klub. Both clubs share the same boathouse since 1919. The separation is mainly historical. Today only a few men’s rowing clubs remain in Germany.
The spelling of “Klub” with a K is unique. It shows the club’s desire to distinguish itself. They wanted to stand apart from the elite English rowing clubs of the time.
