Saint George Wharf isn’t just another riverside development in Vauxhall. It’s a story of ambitious construction a tragic accident and a surprising architectural nomination.
This impressive development boasts over 1400 apartments. It also includes offices retail units and restaurants. Construction took place in phases between 2001 and 2010. The final block St George Wharf Tower opened in 2012. It’s a striking 49-storey skyscraper. At 181 metres it was once touted as the tallest residential building in the UK. Though that title has since been challenged.
The design is quite unique. The buildings’ gull-wing roofs and stylish terraces are easily recognizable. Broadway Malyan Architects designed the development. Their innovative design is definitely eye-catching. However it also gained the development a somewhat unusual nomination.
In 2006 Saint George Wharf was shortlisted for the Carbuncle Cup. This award highlights the worst new buildings in the UK. Ultimately it didn’t win. But the nomination itself shows the development sparks strong opinions.
Then there was the tragic helicopter crash in 2013. A helicopter collided with a crane at the Wharf. The crash resulted in two deaths and numerous injuries. The event casts a shadow over the development’s history. It’s a reminder of the risks associated with large-scale construction.
