Have you ever felt the pulse of a city hidden beneath the surface? The Auer Mühlbach whispers that story. Right here in Munich this seemingly unassuming waterway holds centuries of secrets. It is a branch of the Isar River a vital artery feeding Munich’s water supply. But the Auer Mühlbach is more than just a stream.

Long before Munich officially existed the Isar’s power fueled mills. The river was wild unpredictable. Its course shifted often. Water levels fluctuated dramatically. Mill wheels needed a reliable water source. So people cleverly diverted a side branch creating the Auer Mühlbach. Its constant flow was perfect for industry. The first record of the stream and a mill at Kiesingenum today Untergiesing dates back to 957.

Imagine the Auer Mühlbach in the 19th century. It was a lifeline for Munich’s old town. People used its waters for power. Mills and forges relied on its strength. Clothing was washed in its currents. Even fires were extinguished with its water. But times changed. Open streams became obstacles. They were seen as dangerous and costly. The many bridges and walkways needed constant maintenance. So the city covered much of the Auer Mühlbach with concrete. It disappeared from sight hidden beneath the city.

Thankfully this wasn’t the end of the Auer Mühlbach’s story. Decades later a shift in perspective occurred. People began to recognize the recreational and ecological value of city streams. In 1981 Munich began a project to revive its streams. The city’s development plan stated that surface waterways were important. They helped cool the city and improve its environment.

The Auer Mühlbach’s concrete covers were gradually removed starting in 2000. Today you can see sections of this remarkable stream. On Mondstrasse near Munich’s Little Venice residents can even see the Auer Mühlbach in their backyards. The Auer Mühlbach has become a symbol of Munich’s renewed appreciation for nature. Its revitalization shows how even a hidden waterway can thrive and enhance city life. It is a testament to the power of preserving our history and embracing the beauty of the natural world.
