It began its life as Ashburn Baptist Church in 1951, under the leadership of Reverend Vernon Lyons. Ashburn Baptist Church thrived under Lyons’ leadership, becoming a beacon of faith in the community. By the 1980s, Easter services attracted over 1,500 worshippers, a testament to the church’s impact. Ashburn Baptist Church, far from being content with its own success, helped plant the seeds for 36 new churches. This generosity of spirit speaks volumes about the values held within these walls.
However, even the most steadfast institutions experience growing pains. In 2018, after nearly 70 years of service, Lyons stepped down. Pastor Tommy Thompson took the helm, ushering in a new era for Ashburn. This transition wasn’t without its challenges, but it ultimately led to the church’s current identity as Ashburn United Methodist Church. Today, Ashburn United Methodist Church continues to serve its community. It’s a place where faith intertwines with history, where echoes of the past resonate with the promise of the future.
