Upper Seletar Reservoir is more than just a body of water. It is Singapore’s third impounding reservoir. MacRitchie Reservoir and Peirce Reservoir came before. It sits within the Central Water Catchment area.
Once known simply as Seletar Reservoir, it got its current name in 1992. This was after the Lower Seletar Reservoir was created near Nee Soon. The damming of the Seletar River’s mouth formed the Lower Seletar Reservoir in 1986.
Built to quench Singapore’s thirst after World War I, the Seletar Reservoir began its service in 1940. Princess Alexandra officially opened it on August 10, 1969.
Imagine this. It is 1942. A night bombing raid rocks nearby Nee Soon Village during the Japanese Occupation. Upper Seletar Reservoir suffers damage. Quick repairs restore the water flow.
Before 1969, Upper Seletar Reservoir held 150 million gallons. An expansion increased its capacity to over 5,000 million gallons. The Seletar Scheme cost S$27 million. It made Upper Seletar Reservoir the largest in Singapore at the time. It covers 3.24 sq km and is 17 m deep.
Today, the Upper Seletar Reservoir Park offers 15 hectares of open space. Joggers, walkers, and fishing fans flock here. It was completed in 1973.
The park used to host Hash Harriers and horse riders. The Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and Mandai Orchid Garden are nearby.
The rocket-shaped viewing tower is perhaps the most prominent landmark at Upper Seletar Reservoir.
Water flows into Upper Seletar Reservoir from surrounding areas and eight streams. Pumps transfer this water to Lower Peirce Reservoir. From there, it goes to Woodleigh Waterworks for treatment.
In 1999, Upper Seletar Reservoir was marked as a historic site. In October 2008, the lookout tower gained conservation status.
