The town’s link to Melbourne via these steamers further fueled its growth. Produce flowed from Portarlington to Melbourne, while essential supplies returned, solidifying the town’s importance. Portarlington’s charm also drew holidaymakers. The sandy beaches and picturesque setting offered a welcome escape, and the regular steamer service cemented its reputation as a seaside resort. Today, Portarlington continues to evolve. It’s a popular destination for retirees and holidaymakers, carrying its history into a vibrant present.
