Contemplating Copacabana’s coolest corner? That would be Posto 5. It is more than just sand and sea. Posto 5 is a landmark. It marks a spot where Cariocas meet the waves head-on.
Postos are numbered lifeguard towers. They divide Rio’s beaches. Posto 5 sits on Copacabana. It offers a practical resource. It is a useful landmark for beachgoers.
Copacabana stretches from Posto Dois to Posto Seis. Posto 5 is known as the main beach break. This is where the action is.
But Posto 5’s story runs deeper than just a marker. It is a haven for bodyboarding. Waves here break close to the shore. They are powerful and tubular. Not everyone knows this. Copacabana boasts some of Brazil’s best waves.
Guilherme Tâmega calls Posto 5 home. He is a six-time world bodyboarding champion. Other pros like Claudia Castelo also learned here. The waves at Posto 5 have shaped champions.
These waves can be dangerous. They are strong and heavy. A little slip can be risky. Most of the year, Copacabana’s waves are small. But winter transforms Posto 5. The waves come alive.
A red flag means Posto 5 is about to fire. The waves start to break with full force. What makes the waves so good? They are fast and hollow. They are perfect for bodyboarding. The waves form a tube. Bodyboarders aim to ride inside.
State championships happen here. Around four or five take place each year. If you walk along Copacabana’s promenade near the Othon Palace Hotel, look toward the water. See the crowds waiting for the perfect wave at Posto 5.

For experienced surfers, there’s Shore Break. It is located behind Copacabana Fort between Copacabana and Diabo Beach. Getting there is tough. You must swim for twenty minutes from Copacabana. Or catch a ride with fishermen from Posto 6. Shore Break’s waves are strong and tubular. The bottom is rocky and shallow. It is dangerous. You either get spat out of the tube or crash onto the rocks. It only breaks when the swell is big.
Posto 5 is a place of contrasts. It is both inviting and challenging. It is a place where legends are made.
