Jean Gabin’s story began not so far from here. He spent his childhood in Mériel. The museum is located at 1 Place Jean Gabin. Gabin’s family moved to Mériel in 1900. Here, young Jean developed a love for fishing along the Oise. Though his career took him away, Mériel remained a part of him. He would return to visit his sister and old friends.
Inaugurated in 1992, the Musèe Jean Gabin owes its existence to the generosity of the Moncorgé-Gabin family. They donated personal objects and autographed documents. The museum also features unseen photos and annotated scripts. Movie costumes and tributes from celebrities are on display.
André Brunelin, Gabin’s biographer, said Mériel was to Jean Gabin what Whitechapel was to Chaplin. Jean Moncorgé grew up in this village surrounded by family and friends. He loved running through the woods and fields. He enjoyed helping the farmers. Mériel represented a world he cherished. Gabin often returned to the Val d’Oise for filming.
