Step into the fascinating history of Bannockburn Primary School. Its story begins not in a fairytale kingdom but on a bustling London street. Bannockburn Primary School opened its doors on January 9 1893. It started as separate boys and girls schools. There was also a mixed infants school for the youngest. J R Diggle the Chairman of the London School Board officially opened it. The school was built to accommodate 850 children. By the end of the year over 720 pupils filled the elementary schools.

Bannockburn Primary School wasn’t always easy. Attendance was often poor. Diseases like smallpox and diphtheria were common. The Sanger’s Circus parade and even the Queen’s Birthday caused absences. Hop-picking in Kent and helping mothers after childbirth also kept children away. Many children lacked boots. Poverty was widespread. The school received donations of boots and clothes to help. The school building itself had issues. Workmen fixed drafty windows and leaks.

The early teachers at Bannockburn Primary School worked hard. Classes were huge with around 60 children. Teachers had the right to use corporal punishment. One deputy headteacher refused this. The school received funding based on daily attendance. This led to various attendance incentives. Children with perfect attendance received rewards. Boys watched magic lantern shows. Girls got extra playtime. The curriculum differed between boys and girls. Boys studied mechanics. Girls learned sewing and domestic economy. Even in domestic science lessons teachers cleverly incorporated science.

World War II dramatically impacted Bannockburn Primary School. Children and teachers were evacuated to Kent. The school became a rest centre for people whose homes were bombed. The basement became an air raid shelter. The school was damaged by a fire during a bombing raid. Parts were later removed and the building adapted.

After the war the school changed again. It became Bannockburn Junior Mixed and Infants School. Later it became Bannockburn Primary School. The school’s name and purpose changed. The National Curriculum’s arrival and technology’s use further transformed it. Bannockburn Primary School celebrated its centenary in 1993. The school building underwent a major transformation.
