Curious about a church that honors a Dutch king? Here before us stands Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel. It is one of Jakarta’s most historic churches. Its story began with an agreement. The Reformed and Lutheran congregations in Batavia came together. They decided to build a shared place of worship.

The construction of Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel started in 1834. J.H. Horst designed the building. The first stone was laid on August 24, 1835. Four years later on August 24, 1839, the church was completed. Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel was dedicated to King Willem I of the Netherlands. He reigned from 1813 to 1840. In honor of the king, the church was initially named Willemskerk.

Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel showcases classicist style. It features a circular design. The church sits on a foundation that is three meters high. The front of Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel faces Gambir Station. You can easily spot the rectangular porch. It has paladian pillars supporting a horizontal beam. Paladianism represents an 18th-century English classicist style. It emphasizes symmetry. It also emphasizes harmonious proportions.

The porches on the north and south sides mirror the church’s circular form. They create two concentric circles. These circles surround the worship space. The dome’s construction allows sunlight to flood the interior. It provides ample natural light. Atop the dome, a round tower features floral ornaments. These ornaments have six-petal lotus designs. These are Egyptian symbols for the goddess of light.

Inside Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel, you will find an orgel. J. Datz built it in the Netherlands in 1843. Before the orgel’s installation, a band accompanied worship services. The orgel still functions well. It underwent dismantling and cleaning in 1985. An orgel is a historic European instrument. It resembles an organ. It produces sound using metal pipes.

Today Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel is part of the Gereja Protestan di Indonesia Bagian Barat. This translates to the Protestant Church in Indonesia. It adheres to a Presbyterian synodal system. The Indonesian government recognizes Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel. It is a cultural heritage site. This status provides it governmental protection.

Interestingly Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel is unique. It is the only church in Jakarta that conducts services in Dutch. Services also take place in Indonesian and English.

Strategically located, Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel stands near Gambir Station. It is also close to other landmarks like Monas. In the past, only high-ranking Dutch East Indies officials worshipped here. The church met the spiritual needs of Protestants in the Gambir area. After Dutch rule ended, this restriction was lifted.

The historic orgel remains in good condition. It has been preserved since 1843. A Dutchman named J. Datz created it. The Governor of Jakarta officially declared Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel an Indonesian cultural heritage site. This happened through Decree No. 475 in 1993.

You can also explore a canteen with tasty food at Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel. It offers Manado cuisine like ayam woku and Manado porridge. You can also find Batak dishes. Despite its age, the church’s building is well-maintained. Inside, large windows create a Dutch atmosphere. Its circular shape evokes a courtroom. At the back, there is a special area for royalty. A spiral staircase remains sturdy despite its age. The church holds a Bible printed in 1748 by N. Goetzee.

Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel has served as a filming location for Indonesian movies. These include Warkop DKI and Ayat-Ayat Cinta. Its grand and unique architecture makes it a sought-after location. Gereja Pantekosta Imanuel stands as a testament to Jakarta’s rich history. It blends Dutch heritage with Indonesian culture. Its enduring presence enriches Jakarta’s spiritual landscape.
