Remember the name Wilam. Wilam Hall stands before us. This is more than just a building. It is a vibrant tapestry of history, student life, and Melbourne culture.

Wilam Hall is the smallest residential college of the University of Melbourne. It houses around 73 students from Australia and overseas. The location is ideal. It is a short walk to the Parkville campus and the city.

Originally, this building was named Benvenuta. It was completed in 1893 for Leah Abrahams. She was the widow of a small arms dealer. Imagine the grandeur. Craftsmen and materials were imported from Italy. Over 15 tonnes of marble and steel went into the construction.

In 1925, the Commonwealth Government leased Benvenuta. It became Arbitration Court Offices. Later, it was transformed into an Italian club. It featured a ballroom, an orchestra, and even Sunday boxing matches.

A darker chapter may exist in Wilam Hall’s past. Rumors persist. A bullet hole is visible in the stained-glass window. It is at the top of the main marble staircase. Some say it’s evidence of criminal activity from 1938. Others believe it is related to a family tragedy. Henry Abrahams, Leah’s son, supposedly committed suicide here.

The State Government purchased the building in 1949. It was refurbished and opened as the Drummond Street Hostel in 1951. The Student Representative Council managed it. In 1955, it was renamed Medley Hall. Notably, it became the first co-educational residence in 1969.

Recently, on March 13, 2024, the University Council renamed it Wilam Hall. This change reflects decades of student advocacy. The previous name honored Sir John Medley. He was a member of the Eugenics Society.

Look around. The architecture is Italianate Victorian Baroque. Miniature statuettes adorn the parapets. After a renovation from 2009 to 2011, an extension was added.

Wilam Hall offers many facilities. There is a laundry room. A lounge room can be found here. Study spaces are available for students. There is even a music room with a grand piano.

Did you know that Wilam Hall appeared in the Nicolas Cage film, Knowing? It was released in March 2009.

Living at Wilam Hall includes many perks. All meals are provided. Utility bills are covered. Internet access is included in the fees. The sense of community here is very strong. Students form friendships quickly.

Take a moment to appreciate Wilam Hall. It is more than a residence. It is a place of history, community, and growth.
