Standing tall and proud on the Sebastianstrasse in Nendeln, Sankt Sebastian und Rochus is more than just a beautiful church. It’s a testament to resilience. The building dates back to 1935, a time when the spirit of the community needed lifting. The construction of the church was a symbol of hope, built after the old chapel, with its unique spire, was destroyed by the relentless march of progress. The old chapel, built in 1639, had seen its fair share of hardship, bearing witness to a period when Liechtenstein struggled through plagues and wars. Sankt Sebastian und Rochus was built on the site of the old chapel, keeping alive the traditions of faith and perseverance. Sankt Sebastian und Rochus is dedicated to two important saints in the Catholic faith: Sebastian and Rochus. St. Sebastian, a Roman soldier, who was martyred for his faith, is often depicted being pierced by arrows. St. Rochus, a pilgrim, was known for healing the sick during a plague — the reason he is also considered the patron saint of dogs. The dedication of the church to these saints is a reflection of the community’s desire for protection and healing.
