Whispers of faith echo here. This is GKPS Cililitan. A beacon of Christianity in Jakarta’s bustling heart. It stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Simalungun people. Their journey to establish this church is a story of resilience and cultural preservation.

GKPS Cililitan is part of the Gereja Kristen Protestan Simalungun a church originating from the Simalungun region of North Sumatra. Its roots trace back to the early 1900s when the Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft RMG began missionary work in Simalungun. Initially using Batak Toba the language of the larger Batak group the gospel’s spread was slow. The Simalungun people found it difficult to understand.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1928. A 25-year anniversary celebration sparked a movement. Local leaders formed the Comite Na Ra Marpodah Simalungun. Their goal was simple to spread the gospel using the Simalungun language. This marked a turning point in the church’s development. The Comite worked tirelessly. They translated hymns and portions of the Bible into Simalungun. This significantly increased the church’s reach and relevance within the community. The first Simalungun pastor Djaulung Wismar Saragih Sumbayak was ordained in 1929. His leadership further solidified the Comite’s efforts.

The desire for greater autonomy grew. In 1952 the HKBP Simalungun a district of the larger HKBP church separated. It became the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan Simalungun HKBPS. Finally on September 1 1963 the HKBPS officially changed its name to GKPS. The GKPS became fully independent. This momentous decision marked a significant step towards self-determination. It celebrated the Simalungun people’s unique identity and their rich cultural heritage.

GKPS Cililitan stands as a testament to this legacy. It is a place where the Simalungun language thrives. It’s a place of worship. It’s also a community center.
