Candlestick Point State Recreation Area is often called a hidden gem. It offers a unique blend of nature and recreation. Bayview Hunters Point residents fought for years to reclaim this land. They wanted to transform it from junkyards into a park.

Now, Candlestick Point SRA is a tapestry of grassy uplands and coastal salt marsh. You can find intertidal mudflats and pocket beaches here. Community members gather to enjoy many activities. Look around you. Hawks, herons, ground squirrels, and jackrabbits call this place home. The public pier is a popular spot for anglers. Depending on the season, they catch halibut, jack smelt, and striped bass. Perch, sturgeon, leopard sharks, or bat rays are also caught here.

Many dabbling and diving ducks migrate from Canada and Alaska. They overwinter in the warmer waters of the San Francisco Bay. This makes Candlestick Point SRA an important stop on the Pacific Flyway.

Candlestick Point SRA offers many picnic areas. They have BBQ grills for visitors to enjoy. There are even four group picnic sites. All picnic tables and group sites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

You can also enjoy bird watching here. Or you can walk, fly a kite, and attend free arts and nature programs. Check the Eventbrite page for scheduled events. Volunteer days occur on the first Saturday of every month.

No license is required to fish off the public pier. But all fish and wildlife rules apply. This includes pole and daily bag limits. If you are over 16, you must have a license to fish from the shoreline.

Candlestick often basks in sunshine. This happens while the rest of the city is blanketed in fog. The wind typically picks up in the afternoon. Layered clothing is recommended.

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area demonstrates major land-use changes. It transformed from historic wetlands to landfill to landscaped park. Its name comes from the 19th century. Locals thought burning abandoned sailing ships resembled lighted candlesticks. The flaming masts in the bay looked like lighted candlesticks.

Visitors enjoy panoramic views. You can see the San Francisco Bay and the East Bay Hills. San Bruno Mountain is also visible. The peaceful scenery of the park itself is relaxing. The trails, group picnic sites, and fishing piers offer a getaway. They provide open space and outdoor activities in this urban park.
