Hidden in plain sight on Marseille’s bustling Vieux Port, the Église Saint-Augustin whispers tales of resilience and transformation. The church stands as a testament to centuries of history, quietly observing the ebb and flow of life around the harbor. Église Saint-Augustin, also known as Saint-Ferréol les Augustins, didn’t always have such a prominent position. Originally built further inland, the church was initially on the outskirts of the old city. It wasn’t until Louis XIV expanded Marseille in 1666 that Église Saint-Augustin found itself at the heart of the burgeoning metropolis. Imagine the scene in 1447 as construction began on the church. The Augustinian monks faced a unique challenge. The church was being built on the alluvial, unstable land where the old harbor used to be. They ingeniously incorporated the wood from a decommissioned galley, donated by Jean de Villages, nephew of the famed Jacques Cœur, for the church’s framework. The church, though unfinished, hosted a momentous occasion. Pope Clement VII graced its hallowed halls for the wedding of his niece, Catherine de’ Medici, to the future King Henry II. The consecration ceremony took place in January 1542. Remarkably, the nave was still covered by a simple wooden frame. Over time, various guilds and confraternities sought solace and celebrated their patron saints within the church’s walls. Bakers, blacksmiths, porters, and more found a spiritual home at Église Saint-Augustin. During the French Revolution, the church narrowly escaped demolition. Although spared complete destruction, its adjacent convent wasn’t so lucky, meeting its demise at the hands of progress. Around 1801, the church underwent significant alterations. The fifth bay was removed. A new façade was constructed, changing the church’s appearance forever. Later, in 1803, it acquired its dual name, Saint-Ferréol les Augustins, inheriting the name of another church demolished in 1794. The 19th century brought further trials and transformations for Église Saint-Augustin. The construction of a customs house and the creation of Rue Impériale, now Rue de la République, threatened its existence. Yet, the church persevered. The demolition of surrounding buildings ironically provided a clear view of the church’s façade, directly overlooking the vibrant port. The current façade, a beautiful example of neoclassical style, was constructed in 1874. Today, Église Saint-Augustin invites you to explore its rich history. The church boasts six side chapels, each with unique decorations and stories to tell. The gilded wooden pulpit, dating back to the 17th century, originates from the former Église Saint-Hommebon. And the remarkable altarpiece of the Porters’ Altar, classified as a Beaux-Arts masterpiece in 1911, showcases a stunning painting by Michel Serre. Église Saint-Augustin stands as a quiet sentinel, its history intertwined with the very fabric of Marseille.
