Gazing upon this seemingly simple cube of Muschelkalk, one might not immediately grasp the profound story held within the Denkmal für die Gefallenen der Sinner AG. This memorial, standing before the former Sinner AG administrative building in Grüne Winkel, Karlsruhe, isn’t just a block of stone. It’s a testament to the devastating impact of the First World War on a local company and its community. Commissioned by the directors of Sinner AG, this monument was crafted by Hermann Binz to honor the 128 employees who lost their lives during the war. Dedicated in 1922, the Denkmal für die Gefallenen der Sinner AG was unveiled in a ceremony attended by the entire Sinner staff and numerous Grüne Winkel residents. Director Günthel delivered a poignant speech, marking a moment of collective grief and remembrance. The memorial’s design, a cube-like structure atop a two-tiered pedestal, is crowned by an ancient helmet resting on a plinth adorned with oak leaves. The seemingly simple form belies the intricate details. Ornamental bands featuring stylized acanthus leaves frame the names of the fallen, etched on the sides of the monument. The left side lists those from the main Sinner plant, while the right side commemorates those from the various branch locations. These 128 names, arranged alphabetically, whisper stories of lives cut short, of families forever altered. The inscription on the front reads, “To our beloved colleagues who fell in the World War 1914-1918, in grateful and honorable memory, Sinner AG.” On the back, a powerful statement declares, “Unworthy is the nation that does not joyfully give its all for its honor.” The Denkmal für die Gefallenen der Sinner AG stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of war. It’s a poignant tribute to the individuals who never returned home. It’s a local story, yet one that resonates with universal themes of loss, remembrance, and the enduring impact of conflict. Notably, Sinner AG was the only industrial company in Karlsruhe to erect such a memorial after the war, a testament to the company’s commitment to its employees and their sacrifice.
