In the heart of London, stands a grand old dame, The Old Vic. It has seen it all: melodrama, Shakespeare, even rock concerts. The Old Vic started its life in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre. It was a gift to London from a rather unlikely source: Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. He wanted to give his wife, Princess Charlotte, a lasting tribute in the city she loved. Tragically, she died the following year. The theatre, however, lived on.

Initially, it was known for its “sensational and violent” melodramas. Not exactly highbrow entertainment! But in 1824, the legendary actor Edmund Kean graced its stage. He performed six Shakespeare plays in six nights, bringing a touch of class to the “Old Vic”. Kean, known for his dramatic flair, even insulted the audience during his final curtain call, calling them “ignorant, unmitigated brutes”.

The Old Vic continued to evolve. It became the Royal Victoria Theatre, even enjoying a visit from the future Queen Victoria herself. It saw its share of tragedy, including a fire in 1858 that tragically claimed sixteen lives. But it also witnessed the birth of new movements, such as when Emma Cons took over in 1880. She transformed The Old Vic into a temperance hall and coffee tavern, a far cry from its raucous early days. It even housed the beginnings of Morley College, a testament to Cons’ commitment to education.

Today, The Old Vic stands as a beacon of British theatre. It has been home to the National Theatre Company and seen performances by some of the greatest actors of our time. The Old Vic is a survivor, a living testament to the power of theatre and its ability to adapt and endure.
