Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. Its roots trace back to humble beginnings.
In the early days, believers gathered in homes. They sought fellowship and spiritual nourishment. This small group began meeting in homes around 1939. One location was the house of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Kay on Bayou Street. Another gathering place was Rev. Kiel’s church building.
The church was officially organized on April 25, 1946. Rev. L.P. Pointer Sr. accepted the call to preach. He led a ten-day revival. On July 11, 1946, the church elected Rev. Pointer as their leader. His leadership began on July 15, 1946.
The congregation decided to build a permanent church. It was on the site where the tent church stood. Ground-breaking services took place on April 27, 1947. In March 1950, members marched from the tent to the new church. It was located on Grove and Baer. The church expanded twice to accommodate its growing membership.
Rev. Pointer served as pastor for 22 years. God called him home on July 6, 1968. Several ministers led the church in the following years. In 1983, Rev. Byrd Lacey Jr. became the pastor. A new building was completed in April 1987.
In 2003, Rev. Lacey proposed an addition. It was a Fellowship Hall named after L.P. Pointer. Today Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church gives thanks to God. They recognize the leaders who served the church and community.
Rev. Lionell Alexander is the current pastor of Greater Mount Olive. His objective is to foster the ideals of the New Testament church. He wants Greater Mount Olive to be a lively and joyful congregation. He believes the church’s purpose is to edify the Body of Christ. He wants to be a light in the community. He wants people to seek answers about salvation. He also wants members to give their time and talents to God.
Sis. Sherva Alexander is the First Lady of Greater Mount Olive. She supports her husband in his pastoral role. She is also involved in many church ministries. She directs Vacation Bible School and teaches Women’s Sunday School. She also oversees the church’s social media and website.
Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church continues to evolve. It remains a beacon of faith. It is a testament to the enduring power of community. The church’s history is a reminder of its commitment. It is committed to serving God and the people around them.
