Hidden within Marseille’s eastern suburbs lies Notre-Dame de Nazareth. A humble yet historically significant chapel. This unassuming building stands as a testament to Marseille’s rich past. Construction began around 1130 concluding around 1200. It originally served as the parish church for the ancient village of Saint-Marcel. The village center gradually shifted towards the valley. A new church and a working-class neighborhood developed. The neighborhood was focused on the railway industry. Notre-Dame de Nazareth though largely unknown to the public remains a treasure. Its exterior may appear unassuming. The interior however holds remarkable historical interest.

The Romanesque vault is covered in ochre plaster. The plaster imitates cut stones. A longitudinal crack reveals its age. A beautiful medieval altar is carved with a cross. The cross’s style resembles Templar crosses. A niche in the apse is illuminated by a kind of high window. The window backlights the statue of Mary. Plates commemorating graces attributed to Mary hang around the niche. Paintings depicting accident scenes hang on the nave walls. These are ex-votos part of a larger collection. Much of the collection has been moved.

The sacristy contains various liturgical objects. These objects were preserved over time. Most of the objects show local craftsmanship. A piano sits to the left of the altar. The piano is aged and no longer in tune. In the right-hand chapel an old burial site is marked by two sculpted slabs. These slabs occupy the lower part of the south wall. One bears a raised coat of arms. The other has three Latin inscriptions. Deciphering these inscriptions would be fascinating. Above the tomb hangs a rusty splint. This splint was offered by a disabled person.

Years ago the crumbling bell tower underwent emergency consolidation. Craftsmen companions carried out the work. The roof and bell tower were completely restored. Notre-Dame de Nazareth is the site of an annual pilgrimage. A mass is celebrated there each August 15th. The chapel’s enduring presence speaks volumes about the faith and resilience of the people of Saint-Marcel. Its quiet strength continues to connect generations. It links the past and present of this remarkable corner of Marseille. This understated gem of Marseille offers a captivating glimpse into the heart of its history.
