A church older than time itself – that’s what some might say about Framlev Kirke. This isn’t entirely true, of course, but Framlev Kirke does have a long and fascinating history. The church you see before you, built in the first half of the 12th century, isn’t even the first one to grace this site. Framlev Kirke replaced an even older wooden stave church. This makes the history of worship on this very spot stretch back to the 11th century or even earlier. Imagine that – a thousand years of prayers, hymns, and community gatherings!

Framlev Kirke itself is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture. It’s built from rough-hewn fieldstones and limestone. The church’s size reflects its importance in its heyday. Framlev was once the central hub of Framlev Herred, a district encompassing ten parishes. The church served as a natural administrative center, strategically positioned on the old road between Skanderborg and Randers, with the road to Silkeborg also passing through the village.

Although the old wooden church is gone, you can still catch a glimpse of its legacy. A plank from that original Framlev Kirke now resides in the National Museum of Denmark. This plank represents a rare treasure – it’s the only completely preserved piece of a Danish stave church ever found. Another fragment found its home in the “Den Gamle By” open-air museum in Aarhus. These wooden remnants, once part of Framlev’s very first church, offer us a tangible connection to Denmark’s distant past. They’re a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community that Framlev Kirke embodies.
