Can a school breathe music? At Covington Middle School, it absolutely does. This school, right here, pulsates with the rhythm of Weldon and Verna Covington, two master teachers who shaped Austin ISD’s music programs. Covington Middle School opened its doors in 1986, a tribute to their over 50 years of dedication to music education. Weldon Covington, starting at Austin High in 1932, transformed a small eight-member band into a thousand-strong musical force. His bands consistently achieved first division rankings in National Band Contests. He even became a member of the prestigious American Bandmaster’s Association in 1952, cementing his place as an internationally recognized leader in concert band. Verna Covington, a trailblazer in her own right, became the first female band director in Texas. Her junior high bands consistently earned state and national honors, a testament to her skill and passion. Imagine her leading those young musicians, their instruments singing under her direction. Both Covingtons were deeply involved in the Texas Music Educators Association for over 50 years. Weldon served as band and orchestra chairman and even as president in 1947. Their legacy isn’t just about awards and titles, it’s about the thousands of students whose lives they touched through music. Covington Middle School, with its bustling hallways and classrooms, stands as a living testament to their devotion. Here, the spirit of music continues to thrive, inspiring future generations of musicians and reminding us of the power of education and dedication.
