Who would have thought that a former strawberry field could become an award-winning urban oasis? Kopupaka Reserve, a 22-hectare testament to innovative design, stands before us as a shining example of how urban growth and ecological restoration can coexist. Kopupaka Reserve isn’t just a park. It’s a hybrid space, seamlessly blending a stormwater reserve with an urban park, playground, and even a skatepark. This innovative design, masterminded by Isthmus, earned Kopupaka Reserve the prestigious title of World Landscape of the Year in 2016. The project cost NZ$15 million and involved collaboration between Isthmus group and Natural Habitats. The judges were particularly impressed with how the design incorporated Māori traditions. They praised its poetic and imaginative approach to capturing the area’s soul and nature. The design cleverly uses a system of interlocking timbers inspired by traditional woven baskets used for catching eels. These structures, a joint effort between Isthmus and Rawstorne Studios, not only create a visually striking element but also serve a practical purpose. They help retain silt and provide habitats that will evolve over time. Kopupaka Reserve is more than just a beautiful space. It addresses the very real challenges of urbanisation in northwest Auckland. Once burdened by industrial-scale strawberry farming, the land suffered from runoff and nutrient overloading. This, in turn, degraded the water quality of the local stream. The surrounding urban development further strained the Tōtara and Waiteputa streams. The reserve tackles these issues head-on with a system of constructed wetlands designed to improve the mauri (life force) of the water. The design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding urban fabric. Permeable paving, raingardens, and swales channel urban water runoff into the constructed wetlands for purification. This meticulous approach extends throughout the park, creating a holistic and sustainable environment. The project involved close collaboration with local iwi representatives, reflecting the commitment to aligning the development with Māori cultural values. The result is a community-led space that fosters a strong sense of place. Kopupaka Reserve has brought ecological revitalization to the landscape. The improved water quality has breathed new life into the two freshwater streams, creating healthier habitats for birdlife and marine animals. Kopupaka Reserve is a story of transformation, a fusion of nature and human ingenuity. It showcases a sustainable approach to urban development, reminding us that even in the midst of a bustling city, nature can thrive.
