Could a mosque embody an empire’s hopes? The Yıldız Hamidiye Camii, nestled within the Yıldız neighborhood of Istanbul, certainly tried. Commissioned by Sultan Abdul Hamid II and completed in 1886, the Yıldız Hamidiye Camii stands as a testament to a tumultuous era in Ottoman history. The 19th century saw the Ottoman Empire grappling with territorial losses and the rise of nationalist movements. Abdul Hamid II sought to rejuvenate the empire with a new ideology. This ideology blended Islamic tradition with modern sensibilities, embracing the empire’s diversity while maintaining Ottoman authority. The Yıldız Hamidiye Camii became a symbol of this vision. The mosque’s architecture is a unique blend of Neo-Gothic and classical Ottoman motifs. Designed by Sarkis Balyan, with assistance from Armenian architect Dikran Kalfa, the Yıldız Hamidiye Camii’s exterior features a distinctive neo-Gothic facade, adapted to Ottoman tastes. Inside, the mosque showcases Andalusian-influenced Moorish styles, popular among the Ottoman elite. The dome is a breathtaking spectacle of bright blue, adorned with golden stars and verses from Surah Ikhlas, penned by the calligrapher Ebuzziya Tevfik Bey. Adding to the mosque’s unique character are verses from Surah al-Mulk, written in Kufic script by Abdulletif Efendi. And here’s a fascinating detail: the intricate wooden lattices crafted from cedarwood? Those were personally made by Sultan Abdul Hamid II himself, a skilled carpenter. The Yıldız Hamidiye Camii served as the primary sultanic mosque, hosting lavish Friday prayer ceremonies known as selamlik. These events weren’t just religious observances. They were also displays of imperial power, reinforcing the sultan’s image as the caliph of all Muslims. But the Yıldız Hamidiye Camii’s history also holds a darker chapter. In 1905, the mosque was the site of an assassination attempt on Sultan Abdul Hamid II. A bomb planted under the sultan’s carriage detonated, tragically killing 26 people and injuring dozens more. A fortunate delay caused by the sultan’s conversation with the Sheikh-ul-Islam spared his life. The Yıldız Hamidiye Camii survived the empire’s fall, though it suffered from neglect during the early years of the Turkish Republic. Recent renovations have restored it to its former glory, a reminder of a sultan’s ambition and an empire’s dream. The Yıldız Hamidiye Camii remains a poignant symbol of a pivotal moment in Ottoman history.
