Whispers of history linger around Huma Cape Old Mosque. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a living testament to Penang’s rich past. Built on the foundations of a humble 18th-century structure the Huma Cape Old Mosque stands proudly. This mosque initially served British East India Company troops and the growing Tamil Muslim community.

The earliest records point to a small mosque called the “Chulier Mosque” predating 1798. Oral tradition credits a British East Indian Company sepoy Major Nador Kain as its founder. The original mosque was simple a timber structure with an attap roof. It’s quite remarkable to think of the humble beginnings of such a significant building.

As Penang Island blossomed under Captain Francis Light’s leadership a wave of immigrants arrived. Among them were the Chulias Tamil Muslims from India’s Coromandel Coast. Their numbers grew significantly by 1794. They became an integral part of Penang’s society. Many worked as shopkeepers traders boatmen and laborers.

In 1801 the growing Indian Muslim population necessitated a leader. Lieutenant Governor Sir George Leith appointed Cauder Mohuddeen Marican as Kapitan Keling. This title meant “Captain of the Kelings”. Cauder Mohuddeen a wealthy ship foreman played a pivotal role in the mosque’s development. He secured land from the British East India Company and oversaw the construction of a new mosque.

Cauder Mohuddeen sourced builders stones and bricks from South India. He drew architectural inspiration from Tamil Nadu. The resulting mosque was a beautiful rectangular building with a pyramidal roof and a circular well. This original structure was completed in 1803.

The mosque’s name honors Cauder Mohuddeen’s contributions. It reflects his leadership and significant financial support. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of a man who shaped a community’s faith. The mosque’s evolution is fascinating. It wasn’t simply a one-off construction.

Over time the mosque underwent several renovations and extensions. The 1910 expansion retains parts of the original walls. The new design was a magnificent blend of Mughal revival and Indo-Saracenic styles. Henry Alfred Neubronner a Malacca-born Eurasian architect masterminded this transformation. The addition of a minaret in 1916 completed this expansion.

Further renovations in the 1930s brought the mosque to its current form. This included improvements to the ventilation and natural lighting. The interior was enhanced with white marble floors and a high ceiling. Decorative geometric designs adorn both the exterior and interior. These embellishments respect Islamic principles.

The Huma Cape Old Mosque continues to serve its community. Its story is one of faith perseverance and cultural fusion. It stands as a symbol of Penang’s vibrant multicultural past. The mosque is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living historical narrative that speaks to Penang’s journey and its people. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Penang.
