Giant Gulliver looms before you. He’s not the Gulliver you read about in books. This Gulliver is made of iron and concrete. A hollow shell. He stands in Parque de la Ciudad.
This massive sculpture is the work of Juan Jose Militich. Militich designed and built it between 1981 and 1982. He was commissioned by the Buenos Aires city government. He worked on other projects in the park too. Some were never finished.
The Estatua de Gulliver is more than just a statue. It’s a monument to a particular time and place. It represents a moment in Buenos Aires’ history. The park itself was a place of recreation and leisure. Gulliver was part of that.
Sadly Gulliver’s time in the park was short-lived. The statue was demolished in August 2024. Only photos remain. Photos capturing Gulliver’s imposing form. Photos showing how he dominated the landscape.
