Why a goose? That’s the question that hangs in the air here in Kazlıçeşme Mahallesi. We’re standing in a neighborhood that takes its name from a rather unusual source: a historic fountain adorned with a goose relief. Kazlıçeşme, you see, translates to “goose fountain”. This curious landmark, dating back to 1537, offers a glimpse into the area’s intriguing past. Kazlıçeşme Mahallesi wasn’t always the open public space you see today. Imagine, if you will, the pungent aroma of leather hanging heavy in the air. By order of Mehmed the Conqueror, shortly after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Kazlıçeşme became a hub for tanneries, slaughterhouses, and chandleries. These businesses, essential yet odiferous, were relegated outside the city walls. At one point, over 360 tanneries and 33 butcheries operated within Kazlıçeşme. The neighborhood buzzed with activity, a vital yet somewhat malodorous cog in the city’s machinery. This industrial character defined Kazlıçeşme for centuries. Then, in 1993, a significant transformation occurred. The tanneries and leather factories relocated to a modern industrial zone in Tuzla, across the Sea of Marmara. With the departure of these industries, Kazlıçeşme Mahallesi shed its industrial skin. The old factory buildings were demolished. The air, once thick with the smell of tanning hides, cleared. The neighborhood, now a vast open space, took on a new role as a venue for political rallies and social gatherings. Today, Kazlıçeşme stands as a testament to the city’s ever-evolving nature. While the goose fountain remains, a quirky reminder of its past, the neighborhood has embraced a new identity. As you explore Kazlıçeşme, take a moment to appreciate the historical echoes. Visit the Kazlıçeşme Fatih Mosque, one of the first two mosques built by the Turks in Istanbul, attributed to Mehmed the Conqueror himself. Seek out the Eriklibaba Tekke and the Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Masjid, other historical religious sites that add to the area’s rich tapestry. Even the now-demolished Abdi İpekçi Arena, once a vibrant hub for sports and entertainment, played a part in shaping Kazlıçeşme’s modern story. And so, the story of Kazlıçeşme Mahallesi continues to unfold. From a center of industry to a public gathering space, from a place of pungent smells to open air, this neighborhood exemplifies Istanbul’s dynamic spirit.
