Okapis. What enigmatic creatures. Right here in Lisbon Zoo, you can witness these elusive “forest giraffes” up close. Okapis are truly unique animals. They possess a captivating blend of zebra-like stripes and giraffe-like features. These striking markings serve a crucial purpose in their native habitat, the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The stripes provide excellent camouflage amidst the dappled light and shadows.

Okapis are surprisingly solitary animals. They come together only to breed. Males have short, horn-like structures on their heads called ossicones, while females lack this feature. The Lisbon Zoo is part of a dedicated breeding program. This program aims to ensure the genetic diversity of this endangered species. It’s a collaborative effort involving zoos across North America, Europe, and Asia. The goal is to maintain a healthy captive population and support okapi conservation in the wild.

Did you know that okapis have an incredibly long, prehensile tongue? It measures about 18 inches long. This remarkable tongue allows them to selectively browse for leaves, buds, and even fruits in the understory vegetation. Okapis are specialized feeders. They are the only known mammal in the Ituri Forest to subsist solely on understory plants. They can even use their tongue to groom their ears and eyes.

The okapi’s closest living relative is the giraffe, but they differ significantly in size and appearance. The okapi is much smaller and resembles a deer or antelope more than a giraffe. Okapis are also known for their exceptional hearing. Their large auditory bullae, bony structures in the temporal bone, contribute to their keen sense of sound. This helps them navigate the dense forest and detect potential predators, like the leopard. The Lisbon Zoo plays a vital role in raising awareness about the plight of okapis in the wild. Habitat loss due to logging and human settlement is a significant threat, along with hunting and illegal mining. By visiting the okapis here at the Lisbon Zoo, you contribute to the global efforts to protect these fascinating creatures and their rainforest home.
