Once a slaughterhouse now a media hub. That’s Media City Leipzig before us. It opened its doors on May 2, 2000. The location transformed from a place of meat production to a center of film and television.
Media City Leipzig stands in Leipzig’s Südvorstadt. It borders the MDR television center. Look around. Notice the five identical four-story office buildings. Green courtyards nestle between them. These buildings house nearly 90 companies. Film, television, radio, web and print media companies thrive here.
Saxonia Entertainment and Saxonia Media Filmproduktion call this place home. They produce shows like “Musik für Sie” and the TV series “In aller Freundschaft”. Some studios even welcome audience participation for shows like “Riverboat”.
Notice the studio complex extending from Steinstraße. It holds four studios varying in size. They range from 50 to 1500 square meters. A glass hall connects the office buildings and studios. It is called the Mediengarten. This space hosts galas, corporate events and TV recordings.
Consider the exterior design. The buildings’ sand-colored facades reflect the old slaughterhouse’s yellow brick buildings. A large workshop and storage area sits behind the main buildings. This area supports the studio productions.
From 2017 to 2020, Media City Leipzig housed “LEAVR”. It was a virtual reality experience space and a 360-degree cinema. Imagine stepping into a new reality.
Media City Atelier GmbH operates the workshops. This media service company equips shows. “Die Feste” with Florian Silbereisen uses their services. The MDR’s extensive prop collection is stored here. The workshops buzz with creative energy.
During the 2018 Winter Olympics, Studios 4 and 5 became the National Broadcasting Center. ARD and ZDF shared the space. About 100 employees worked around the clock from February 9 to 25. They delivered Olympic coverage to the nation.
DREFA Immobilien Management GmbH manages the entire Media City Leipzig complex. It is a subsidiary of MDR Media GmbH. MDR is Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. The circle of media production is complete.
