Founded on June 7, 1976, this institution has tirelessly worked to create, stage, and produce dance works across diverse styles and creative trends. Since its beginning, the National Company of Dance has been a hub of creativity. It embraces both tradition and innovation. The company constantly seeks new ways to conceive, produce, and showcase its artistic work.
Between 2021 and 2023, under the leadership of Executive Director Roberto Rivera, the company created 26 dance works. These performances reached an impressive 92,573 spectators through 276 shows. Even in the early months of 2024, they held 37 artistic presentations for approximately 8,622 viewers.
In 2023, the National Company of Dance took on an exciting challenge. They welcomed 34 new professional dancers into their ranks. These dancers now form the classical ballet and pluricultural dance ensembles. They joined the contemporary group of 12 co-creating and interpreting dancers. These additions have strengthened the company’s objectives.
The National Company of Dance aims to incorporate new languages from other dance forms. They blend these with contemporary dance, which has been central to their work in recent years. They also strive to meet audience demand for styles closer to everyday life.
In 2024, the institution continues its commitment to creating dance works in various languages and creative trends. From November 2023, they have staged classical dances like The Nutcracker, Texturas, and Carmen under Héctor Sanzana’s direction. Pluricultural works such as Awana, Vasija de Barro, and Romance Quiteño, led by Luis Conejo and Edison Anchundia, have also graced the stage. These productions join Los Cuerpos que Suenan, a contemporary dance piece by Jorge Alcolea.
The National Company of Dance seeks to broaden access to and enjoyment of dance. They showcase their creative work in different spaces, both nationally and internationally.
Between 2021 and 2023, the company shared Ecuadorian dance through tours in 18 provinces and four countries. These countries include the United States, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Chile. The company also participated in 18 national and three international dance festivals.
The National Company of Dance also provides its facilities, including rehearsal rooms and a theater, to independent artists. Since 2021, they have opened their stage to 71 artistic and cultural groups. This fosters connections with all dance creators, including independent artists and collectives.
Moreover, the institution regularly hosts continuous training events. They promote classical and contemporary techniques, taught by their choreographers and dancers. These workshops are designed for children, teens, and young adults who wish to learn more about dance.
The National Company of Dance also hosts training events, such as workshops in various techniques and styles, for independent dancers. Between 2021 and 2023, they held 137 workshops with 2,709 participants.
