Did Sikorski ever imagine, as he led Poland’s government-in-exile, that he’d be commemorated with a statue right here in London? The General Sikorski statue stands as a testament to a remarkable life cut tragically short. It depicts the general in a saluting pose, a gesture towards the Polish war memorial nearby, a memorial he himself unveiled in 1941 at Newark Cemetery. The statue captures his unwavering commitment to Poland’s freedom. General Sikorski’s life is a story of resilience and leadership. He guided the Polish government-in-exile, first from Paris, then Angers, and finally, London, after escaping the Nazi occupation. He became prime minister and commander-in-chief of the Polish armed forces, a heavy burden during those dark times. The General Sikorski statue in London serves as a powerful reminder of his pivotal role. He led the Polish forces in the West from his headquarters at The Rubens at the Palace hotel from 1940 to 1943. The very spot where we stand. The inscription on the statue’s plinth details his service: “Prime Minister of the Polish Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces, 7 November 1939 – 4 July 1943.” Another plaque lists the major campaigns the Polish forces fought in during World War II: the Polish Campaign, French Campaign, Narvik, Battle of Britain, Battle of the Atlantic, Tobruk, Monte Cassino, Falaise, Arnhem, and the Warsaw Uprising. A sobering reminder of the sacrifices made. General Sikorski’s life ended abruptly in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943, an event shrouded in mystery to this day. This statue, unveiled in 2000, not only honours Sikorski but also all Polish soldiers, seamen, and airmen who fought during World War II. It’s a lasting tribute to their bravery and to the unwavering alliance between Poland and Britain. As Churchill said, Sikorski was “a statesman, a soldier, a comrade, an ally and, above all, a Pole.” His memory lives on, etched in bronze, right here in the heart of London.
