Thomas Henderson, a blacksmith and engineer from Scotland, arrived in New Zealand in 1840. He quickly established himself in Auckland’s business world. In 1844, Henderson and his partner, Macfarlane, acquired a vast tract of land from Ngāti Whātua chiefs. This land, nestled between the Waitakere Ranges and the Waitemata Harbour, held a treasure: extensive stands of kauri trees.
These majestic trees, revered by Māori, were prized for their size, strength, and unique buoyancy. Henderson recognized the potential of this valuable resource. Around 1849, he established a mill at the head of the tidal estuary, Te Wai o Pareira. Henderson Mill became a hub of activity. The mill harnessed the power of the waterways flowing from the Waitakere Ranges, including Oratia and Opanuku Streams, which feed into the Waitemata Harbour. This strategic location allowed for efficient timber export and the transport of supplies inland.
The mill’s impact was profound. It fostered a growing community that eventually became the town of Henderson. However, this progress came at a cost. In just 15 years, the mill felled an astounding 45 million super feet of kauri, a volume roughly equivalent to 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The landscape was forever altered. A replica millhouse and water wheel, built in 1995, offer a glimpse into the past. Although the replica features an undershot wheel, unlike the original overshot design, it still evokes the spirit of innovation and industry that defined Henderson Mill.
