Records show it mentioned as “Feldcundingon” in a donation document. The name likely added “Feld” to distinguish it from another place called Gunding.
Feldgeding’s heart beats in its St Augustinus Church. This beautiful building is a protected monument. Its construction began in the 15th century. The church’s late Gothic choir and tower likely date back to around 1477. Admire the exquisite cross-arch friezes adorning the tower. The nave however was built later in 1561 undergoing renovations in the 1670s.
Step inside St Augustinus and let its history envelop you. The altars crafted by Adam Luidl around 1670 are magnificent. A painting of St Augustine the church’s patron saint is the centerpiece. Joseph Hauber painted it in 1830. Figures of Saints Nicholas and Sylvester stand guard. Notice the wooden sculpture of Anna selbdritt. Pilgrims once revered it as a miraculous image. Its origins trace back to around 1430.
Don’t miss the oldest stained-glass window. It’s small only 22 centimeters tall. Yet it holds a treasure. Created in 1513 it depicts Thomas Lämpl. He was the vicar of Bergkirchen parish at the time. He kneels before the Virgin Mary. Feldgeding’s history lives not only in its church but also in its very name and its lasting architecture.
