Suddenly, the year is 1931. A hush falls over 365 Market Street in San Francisco. Inside, the clandestine 365 Club thrives. Bimbo’s 365 Club, as it later became known, was a speakeasy and after-hours gambling den. It pulsed with the energy of the era’s vibrant nightlife. A young Rita Hayworth graced the chorus line. Patrons marveled at Dolfina, “the Girl in the Fishbowl,” seemingly swimming in a large tank above the bar. This illusion, crafted with mirrors, added to the club’s mystique. Fast forward to 1951. Agostino “Bimbo” Giuntoli, the driving force behind the 365 Club, purchased the Bal Tabarin at 1025 Columbus Avenue. He relocated the club, retaining the iconic “365” and christening it Bimbo’s 365 Club. The Art Deco elegance of the Bal Tabarin remained. Giuntoli enhanced it with an expanded kitchen and an additional bar, preserving the original Pflueger bar. Bimbo’s 365 Club quickly became a San Francisco institution. It hosted legendary performers like Dick Contino, Xavier Cugat, Louis Prima, and Ray Anthony. Comedians such as Sid Caesar and Rodney Dangerfield brought laughter to the stage. The club continued to evolve. In the late 1960s, it embraced a wider range of musical genres, welcoming artists like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, and Neil Diamond. After a period of relative quiet, Bimbo’s 365 Club was reborn in 1988 under the leadership of Giuntoli’s grandson. Today, Bimbo’s 365 Club carries the torch of its rich history. It remains a beloved venue for both private events and public performances, echoing the energy and glamour of its early days.
