This mural is part of the larger Tony Garnier Urban Museum. It is a unique open-air museum. The museum celebrates Garnier’s contributions to the city. The Fresque Musée T. Garnier 16 depicts the Hôpital de Grange-Blanche. Today, it is known as Hôpital Edouard Herriot. Garnier designed this hospital applying hygienic principles. He used separate pavilions to prevent cross-contamination.
Tony Garnier significantly impacted Lyon’s urban landscape. In the early 20th century, he focused on social progress through architecture. Garnier designed the first cheap housing complex in France. It was built between 1920 and 1934. This complex became the Tony Garnier City. It is located in the United States district in Lyon’s VIIIth arrondissement.
Garnier envisioned a functional city. It had large spaces, sunshine, and greenery. He faced budgetary constraints. He had to add floors to his residential buildings. These buildings were initially planned to be more modest.
The Tony Garnier Urban Museum began in 1988. Designers from CitéCréation created monumental paintings on the walls. The museum features several painted walls. These walls display Garnier’s sketches of his ideal future city. Other murals depict Lyon’s life. Some present ideal cities imagined by international artists. These artists come from countries like Egypt, India, and Mexico.
The murals faced renovations after 30 years. Zolpan and CitéCréation collaborated on this project. They had also worked together on the first renovation program. A technical expertise study highlighted the need to replace the supports for half of the murals. The restoration involved 24 giant building facades. In total, 5,500 m2 were restored over 8 to 10 years. Some murals were reproduced identically. Others were improved. Still others were completely redone.
The Musée Urbain Tony Garnier promotes Garnier’s work. It raises awareness of 20th-century architecture. The museum organizes cultural events. It also designs events for local audiences. The Fresque Musée T. Garnier 16 serves as a reminder. It highlights Garnier’s influence on Lyon. It shows his dedication to creating functional and beautiful urban spaces.
