Have you ever seen a sculpture made of boats? Standing in front of the Monochrome for Paris Sculpture, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the sight of 60 aluminum boats. It looks like an enormous tree with branches made of these boats. The sculpture is so high that it almost touches the sky. It’s made of stainless steel and is about 10 meters tall and wide.

The Monochrome for Paris Sculpture was created by American artist Nancy Rubins in 2013. It’s a public artwork and a true testament to the unique artistic vision of Rubins. Located in the 13th arrondissement, on the central lawn of the Esplanade Pierre-Vidal-Naquet, this sculpture is a striking addition to the Parisian landscape. Its unusual design brings the artistic elements of boats to life and creates a dialogue between the urban environment and nature. Each boat is carefully placed to create a unique and captivating visual spectacle.

The sculpture wasn’t always supposed to be located where it is. Initially, it was destined for a spot along the new Tramway line T3a. This tramway was being extended through the city, and this was going to be part of a project that brought art to the city’s public spaces. However, in a surprise move, it ended up on the banks of the Seine, a move that was meant to highlight the connection of the city and the river that runs through its heart. The sculpture was installed in 2013, just a few months after the tramway line opened. The city quickly embraced this new architectural feature, as many saw the sculpture as a visual representation of the city’s famous coat of arms.

Standing in front of this gigantic sculpture, you can’t help but feel small but wonder at the work and the incredible talent of the artist. It’s a captivating sight that’s worth every minute of your time and inspires you to look at the urban landscape with a fresh perspective.
