Ever wonder how a French priest’s vision took root in the heart of Honolulu? Chaminade University of Honolulu stands as a testament to faith and education. It began its journey in 1955.

Initially, it was known as St. Louis Junior College. The Marianists, a religious order, founded it. They sought to create a Catholic institution of higher learning in Hawaii.

Two years later, it expanded. The college became a four-year co-educational institution. It was renamed Chaminade College. This honored Father William Joseph Chaminade. He was the founder of the Society of Mary.

Father Chaminade lived through the French Revolution. He believed faith and reason should combine. This would help people reach their full potential.

In 1977, Chaminade evolved again. Graduate programs were added. It officially became Chaminade University of Honolulu.

The campus itself has a rich history. The Spanish Mission-inspired buildings have been here for almost a century. Many features have been here since 1928. These include the E Komo Mai Circle and the statue of Father Chaminade.

During World War II, the campus served the community. Classes moved and the campus became a temporary hospital. It hosted the Army’s 147th General Hospital for five years.

Today, Chaminade offers many programs. There are 26 undergraduate degrees. Six graduate programs are available. Five doctoral programs provide advanced learning.

Chaminade’s approach to education is special. It focuses on the whole person. It emphasizes faith, reason, and preparing students for their careers. Marianist values guide the university. These values include education for faith formation and service. They also include justice, peace, and adaptation to change.

The university is located in Kaimuki, Honolulu. It is near the base of St. Louis Heights. The location is about two miles from Waikiki. It is also four miles from Downtown Honolulu.

Chaminade University is more than just a school. It is a place where students become world citizens. They value community service. They also strive to create a more just society.

The university’s athletic teams are called the Silverswords. This is a reference to a Hawaiian plant. The plant is known for its beauty and resilience. Chaminade also hosts the annual Maui Invitational basketball tournament.

So, as you stand here, remember the journey. Remember the vision of Father Chaminade. Chaminade University continues to educate and inspire. It lives by its motto “Vita In Verbo” or “Life in the Word”.
