Step into the vibrant heart of Budapest. Right here before you stands Duna Plaza a shopping and entertainment complex unlike any other. It’s more than just a mall. It’s a piece of Budapest’s history.

Duna Plaza wasn’t built overnight. It rose from the ashes of the former Ganz Danubius Hungarian Ship and Crane Factory. This transformation happened in 1994-1996. The grand opening was on October 14 1996. It was a momentous occasion. Hungary’s first American-style mall. Duna Plaza opened just a month before its rival the Pólus Center in Árpádföld.

Imagine the excitement. The buzz of anticipation as people flocked to this modern marvel. The mall wasn’t just a place to shop. It was a destination. A place for family fun. A nine-screen multiplex cinema. The first of its kind in Hungary. A central ice rink provided entertainment. School groups even enjoyed skating lessons.

The initial space boasted 34 000 square meters of shopping space. It housed 140 shops. A six-story parking garage stood beside the building. A vast surface parking lot behind it. This lot now even features a car and motorcycle driving school. A remarkable repurposing of space.

Duna Plaza’s location was key. Directly above the Gyöngyösi Street station of Metro Line 3. Opened in 1990 and renovated between 2017 and 2019. An underground passage connected the mall and the station. Shops now occupy that passage. An ingenious use of space.

The mall’s popularity exploded. It reflected Hungary’s embrace of Western consumer culture. New words even entered the vocabulary. ‘Plázázás’ meaning ‘going to the mall’ and ‘plázacica’ referring to a mall-going girl. The average daily footfall in 1998 was estimated at 30 000 visitors. 15-20% of them were foreigners.

Competition arrived. The WestEnd City Center opened in 1999. Duna Plaza’s popularity faltered. But the owners responded. A 1.5 billion forint renovation in 2002 breathed new life into Duna Plaza. They upgraded the entire building. They even added a multi-level restaurant terrace. It featured water features and sculptures.

A new 15 000 square meter wing was also added to the parking garage. This cost 25 million euros. It housed a fitness center. Plans for an IMAX 3D cinema were made. This cinema ultimately opened at Arena Mall in 2007. Today the parking garage holds 1500 vehicles.

Duna Plaza isn’t resting on its laurels. Plans for another major renovation are underway. The mall will close in 2026. It will reopen in 2028 bigger and better than ever. A testament to its enduring presence. A reminder of how Duna Plaza has shaped Budapest’s commercial landscape. A shopping center that’s part of the city’s story. A story that’s still unfolding.
