Slipping through time, let’s journey back to the bustling streets of 1922 Jakarta. A small group of Batak Christians, newly arrived in the city, sought a spiritual home. They yearned for the familiar hymns and rituals of their Hkbp faith. This longing led them to a humble space within the Hollandsch-Inlandsche School in Kwitang. Here, amidst the unfamiliar surroundings of Batavia, the seeds of Hkbp Pondok Cabe were sown. Hkbp Pondok Cabe wasn’t always in Pondok Cabe. Its story began in the heart of Jakarta. It’s a story of migration, community and unwavering faith. The first official service of this burgeoning congregation took place on November 20, 1919. It was held at Jl. Kernolong 37, now known as Jl. Kramat IV. This marked not just the establishment of Hkbp Pondok Cabe, but also the first Batak church in Jakarta, and indeed on the island of Java. The church became a sanctuary, a piece of home for Batak Christians navigating the complexities of a new city. Interestingly, the initial support for this community didn’t come solely from within the Batak community. The Gereformeerde Kerk, now known as GKI Kwitang, extended a helping hand. Minister L. Tiemersma of Gereformeerde Kerk led the initial services, providing spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging to the newly formed congregation. Furthermore, this act of interfaith solidarity extended to financial support. The Kwitang church assisted in providing a salary for the first HKBP minister, Mula Nainggolan. The early years of Hkbp Pondok Cabe demonstrate the power of community, both within and across religious lines. Hkbp Pondok Cabe’s journey mirrors the larger narrative of the HKBP church in Indonesia. It showcases the resilience and adaptability of faith, even as it traverses geographical and cultural boundaries. The church became more than a place of worship. It transformed into a cultural hub, a place where traditions were preserved and celebrated. This vibrant community continues to thrive, a testament to the enduring spirit of Hkbp Pondok Cabe.
