Thankfully, those days are long gone. In 1983, this magnificent structure, formerly the Good Shepherd Community Church, became the heart of Maine Township.
Originally designed by renowned architect Lloyd Wright, the building’s dramatic peaks and skylights, trimmed with now-green copper, were intended to inspire a “sense of elevation” fitting for a religious purpose. Today, they serve as a reminder of the building’s unique history and the forward-thinking spirit of Maine Township.
The transition wasn’t without its hurdles. The township invested a significant sum to adapt the former church for its administrative needs. The main entrance was relocated, elevators were installed, and the interior was transformed to accommodate departments like General Assistance and Disabled Services. Just a few years later, in 1995, the township expanded further with a 7,000-square-foot addition, carefully designed to complement Wright’s original vision.
But the Maine Township Town Hall is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to the township’s commitment to serving its residents.
