Can you imagine a lake once called Wita Topa? Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis wasn’t always the picturesque spot we see today. It was once a sprawling wetland a vast marshland teeming with life different from what we see now. The Dakota people who lived here long before European settlement knew it as Wita Topa meaning “Four Islands”. This refers to the small islands that dotted the marshy landscape.

The story of Lake of the Isles is a testament to human intervention a story of transformation. In the 1880s dredging began. A small lake and the surrounding marsh were reshaped. The dredged peat and silt were used to create the parkland surrounding the lake we enjoy today. This wasn’t without its challenges. The settling of the dredged materials caused shoreline instability and water quality issues. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has undertaken a long-term project to address these challenges. They’re stabilizing the shoreline and improving the overall park experience. They’ve even created twelve stone access points to the lake.

But what about those islands? At one point there were four. Now only two remain. Mike’s Island in the north and Raspberry Island in the south are protected wildlife refuges. These islands are home to virgin woods. Landing on them is strictly prohibited. Signs clearly mark this. Imagine the wildlife thriving unseen within those protected areas. The quiet life undisturbed by human presence.

Today Lake of the Isles is part of Minneapolis’s Chain of Lakes. It’s a vibrant community space. People enjoy walking and biking the paved paths that wind for nearly three miles around the lake. In winter the lake transforms. It becomes an ice skating rink and a hockey arena. The lake even hosts a New Year’s Eve celebration a magical night filled with roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate.

Prince himself sang about the lake calling it cool. Lake of the Isles has also been featured in popular culture. It appeared in the opening credits of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the 1982 film The Personals.

So as you stand here by Lake of the Isles remember the Dakota name Wita Topa. Remember the transformation from wetland to park. Remember the quiet beauty of its protected islands. And remember that this beautiful lake is not just a natural wonder. It is a place shaped by history and loved by generations.
