Behold. The Viaduc du Jonquier stands as a testament to engineering prowess. Have you ever paused to consider the sheer scale and history interwoven into this structure?

The Viaduc du Jonquier is a crucial part of the railway line. It connects Miramas to Marseille along the stunning Côte Bleue. This railway is also known as the Blue Coast line.

Imagine the late 19th century. The Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée envisioned a secondary route. This route would relieve pressure on the existing line through the Nerthe tunnel. This led to the creation of the line that includes the Viaduc du Jonquier.

The chosen path detoured around the Étang de Berre. It traversed the Caronte channel near Martigues. Then it skirted the Côte Bleue on its way to L’Estaque. This presented significant construction challenges.

Look at the viaduct. It stretches impressively. The Viaduc du Jonquier spans 274 meters in length. It towers 36 meters high. This makes it a prominent feature of the landscape.

The railway line itself is 61 kilometers long. It features 18 viaducts or bridges. There are also 23 tunnels. The Viaduc du Jonquier is close to Niolon. Other notable structures include the Caronte bridge. Also it includes the viaducts of Eaux-salées, Corbière, and La Vesse. Paul Séjourné was the architect for some of these.

Consider the coastal path below. It winds its way through the valley. The path ascends toward Fort de Niolon Haut. To pass under the Viaduc du Jonquier you must veer off the marked path. You need to move towards the viaduct. Then pass beneath its final arch on the south side of the railway line.

Trains still run on this line. TER Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur provides frequent service. There are 14 trains daily in each direction on weekdays. The schedule operates on an hourly basis. It connects in Miramas with other TER lines heading towards Salon-de-Provence, Arles, Montpellier, Avignon and Lyon.

The Viaduc du Jonquier is more than just a railway bridge. It is a symbol of connection. It links communities along the Blue Coast. The viaduct offers views of the Rade de Marseille and the Massif de Marseilleveyre. The viaduct stands as a reminder of human ingenuity. It connects us to the past. It carries us into the future.
