It began as the fifth outpatient department for public funded free medical care in Shanghai in 1952.
The Shanghai Municipal Government gathered famous doctors. They came from all over the world. These doctors established the first organization of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai. It was called the Fifth Outpatient Department or FOD. The FOD was in charge of public medical care for cadres in the city.
Many well-reputed doctors of traditional Chinese medicine worked here. They included Shi Youshan and Tong Zhongyi in the orthopedic department. Gu Bohua worked in surgery. Lu Yuanlei, Yan Erling, Zhan Cigong, Zhang Fengjiao, Pang Yu, and Cheng Mengxue were in the medicine department. Zhang Zanchen specialized in otolaryngology. Zhu Xiaonan and Cheng Danian were in gynecology. Gu Kunyi, Lu Shouyan, Yang Yongxuan and Huang Xianming practiced acupuncture. Wen Maokang was the expert in hemorrhoid treatments.
The Fifth Outpatient Department supplied 29 experts of traditional Chinese medicine to new organizations in the city. This happened in 1954 and 1956. Twenty-one of them were professors. Because of this, the Fifth Outpatient Department is known as the birthplace of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai. It is also known as the cradle of famous doctors of traditional Chinese medicine. Its influence extended to Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces.
In January 1976, the Fifth Outpatient Department merged. It joined the Shanghai Massage & Chinese Medicine Outpatient Department and Nanchang Road Xinzhen Outpatient Department. They formed a new hospital. It was named \u5cb3\u9633 Hospital for its location on Yueyang Road in Xuhui District.
\u5cb3\u9633 Hospital grew in strength. It was recognized as a Class A tertiary hospital of traditional Chinese medicine in 1994. In 1995, the hospital moved to Ganhe Road in Hongkou District. It expanded its medical services to adapt to development. In 1998, \u5cb3\u9633 Hospital was approved. It became a Class A tertiary hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. It successfully transformed into a modern comprehensive hospital.
In 2007, the hospital passed an assessment by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was recognized as a key hospital of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. It topped the list of Class A tertiary hospitals of its kind in China. It passed a reexamination in 2012. This began a new journey of development.
