Did the bells of Simon-Petrus-Kirche ever ring for a pirate’s wedding? Probably not. But the fascinating history of this church in Bremen certainly holds other captivating tales. The Simon-Petrus-Kirche, a modern marvel of brick, metal, and glass, stands proudly in Habenhausen. Consecrated in 1995, this striking structure became a vital part of the community. The St. Johannes-Kirche in Arsten could no longer accommodate the growing population. Thus, the Simon-Petrus-Kirche was born. Inside, natural light floods the white walls, illuminating the artwork within. The artist Thomas Duttenhoefer crafted the altar cross, pulpit, and a small Pieta. The pulpit, made of rust-covered iron, features a fragment of a fishing net. This symbolizes Simon Peter, the church’s namesake, and his calling as a “fisher of men.” The altar cross, also by Duttenhoefer, stands tall in the apse. Its symbolism is rich. Jesus’ left arm stretches across the crossbeam. His open hand points skyward. His ear seems to listen to the prayers of the congregation. Interestingly, the Simon-Petrus-Kirche boasts an altar plate with a long and winding journey. This medieval stone, etched with five consecration crosses, once belonged to St. Johannes-Kirche. During the Reformation, it was likely removed. Later, it served as a floor fragment. Then, it became a table in the community center garden. Finally, in 1995, it found its place as the altar plate in the Simon-Petrus-Kirche. The church’s carillon is a marvel. Its 24 bronze bells, cast by the Dutch firm Petit & Fritsen, fill the air with enchanting melodies. The largest bell, the c2, bears inscriptions. One reads, “Conserva Domine Hospitium Tuae Ecclesiae,” meaning “Preserve, Lord, the dwelling place of your church.” The other is a verse from Psalm 145. Three of the bells swing freely and are used for special occasions. The d2 tolls for the deceased, while the f2 calls the faithful to prayer. The Simon-Petrus-Kirche is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Arsten-Habenhausen. Along with the St. Johannes-Kirche, it serves a community of around 7,200 members. This includes kindergartens and a cemetery.
