You might think of it as a place of last resort, a place where hope seems to dwindle. Yet for many, the Metropolitan Remand Centre is a crucial step towards justice. Situated in Ravenhall, just a short drive from Melbourne’s bustling CBD, the centre stands as a stark reminder of the complexities of our legal system. This is where individuals accused of a crime, those who have not been granted bail, await their day in court. The Metropolitan Remand Centre opened in 2006, built as part of a major overhaul of Victoria’s corrections system. It’s a maximum-security facility and its inmates are a mixture of those awaiting trial, sentenced prisoners awaiting appeals, and a small number of inmates transferred to free up beds at the HM Melbourne Assessment Prison. The centre has a capacity of 954 inmates, each housed in one of four general units with 75 beds each, one protection unit with 100 beds, and several other units dedicated to the needs of vulnerable or young prisoners.

But the history of the Metropolitan Remand Centre isn’t just about its administrative functions. The centre’s story is interwoven with events that have shaken the state of Victoria. In 2015, the largest prison riot in Victorian history took place at the centre, just a day before a statewide smoking ban took effect across the state. Nearly 400 prisoners, fueled by a mix of frustration and resentment, riots, igniting numerous fires and causing damage estimated at $10-12 million. It was a stark reminder of the challenges faced within prison systems and the need for a delicate balance between security and rehabilitation. For many, the Metropolitan Remand Centre remains a silent witness to this ongoing struggle, a place where justice is sought amid complex narratives of human transgression and redemption.
