That all changed with the arrival of a pioneering family, the Curlewis family. They made their mark here in 1845 when George Campbell Curlewis, a squatter by trade, purchased a significant chunk of land. This, as they say, is where the story of Curlewis really begins. The name, as you can see, stuck. And the influence of the Curlewis family certainly didn’t end there. In fact, the Catholic school established here in 1850 closed in 1873, refusing to lease the building to the new Education Department. That’s a testament to the strong sense of community and identity that existed here, even then.
