Originally conceived for the Expo 95, a joint venture between Budapest and Vienna, the Tűskecsarnok’s fate seemed uncertain when the expo was cancelled. Construction halted, leaving the project in limbo for nearly two decades. But like a dormant seed, the Tűskecsarnok eventually found its time to bloom. Revived and completed in 2014, the Tűskecsarnok now stands as a hub of activity. The 84 glass spikes adorning its domed roof aren’t just for show. They flood the interior with natural light during the day, eliminating the need for artificial illumination. At night, these same spikes transform into a dazzling display of color, illuminating the Budapest skyline. Inside the Tűskecsarnok’s elliptical embrace, a world of sport and culture unfolds. The surrounding complex boasts additional facilities, including the Tűskesátor, or “Spike Tent,” another ice rink where the KMH Budapest women’s team showcases their skills.
