Deer barrows! That’s what Hjortshøj means. This quaint railway town holds secrets from the Nordic Bronze Age.

Hjortshøj is a small railway town in Aarhus Municipality. It is located about 14 kilometers north of Aarhus. The town’s name comes from a round barrow. This barrow is one of two in the area.

We are standing near the ancient burial mounds. These mounds give Hjortshøj its name. Hjortshøj translates to “Barrow of Deers.” These barrows are thought to be from the Nordic Bronze Age. Imagine the rituals performed here millennia ago.

These prehistoric barrows are rare in the municipality. Fortunately they are protected by law now. These protected barrows offer a peek into our past. Along with Jelshøj, these are some of the few remaining.

The barrows have not been dated with certainty. However experts believe they were constructed in the Nordic Bronze Age. Picture the people who built these mounds. They honored their dead in this very spot.

Hjortshøj itself has a population of 3,608 as of January 2024. It has grown into a lovely community. It includes a primary school, a post office, and a bank. The Hjortshøj railway station serves the town. It is on the Grenaa railway line.

Hjortshøj Church is a typical Danish village church. It dates back to 1100 CE. It was rebuilt in 1492. The white walls have seen centuries of change.

There’s also a co-owned ecovillage here. It’s called Andelssamfundet i Hjortshøj or AiH. AiH was started in 1987. The first constructions began in 1992. Around 300 people call it home now. It is located on the outskirts of Hjortshøj.

The town also has its own soccer team called Virup IF. The team brings the community together. Cheering on their local players creates town spirit.

There’s something special about Hjortshøj. It is more than just a railway town. It is a place where history and community meet. It’s a place where ancient barrows whisper stories. These stories tell tales of the past. They also reflect the vibrant present. As you explore, remember the deer barrows. Remember the people who shaped this land.
