The Marine Corps of the Republic of Indonesia plays a vital role. It serves as the naval infantry and amphibious warfare force. The Korps Marinir is not just a military unit. It embodies the spirit of “Jalesu Bhumyamca Jayamahe”. This Sanskrit motto translates to “Glorious on the Land and Sea.”
The history of the Korps Marinir dates back to November 15, 1945. It was initially formed as Corps Mariniers in Tegal. This date marks the birthday of the Marine Corps.
The CM was intended as a training school. Navy sailors would learn ground warfare. However, a lack of naval equipment led them to guerrilla warfare. They fought in the jungles alongside the Army.
The Ministry of Defense recognized the need for an amphibious commando unit. In 1948, the Korps Komando or Naval Commando Corps was established. Veterans of the CM in Tegal formed the first recruits. This cemented November 15 as the Corps’ official birthday.
In 1950, the armored element was raised. This was the basis of the 1st Marine Cavalry Regiment. They were initially armed with Dutch equipment.
The KKO participated in various military operations. Operation Jayawijaya was one of the largest amphibious operations. Thousands of marines were planned to land on Biak in 1963. This was part of the Trikora Campaign to take West Irian from Dutch control. The operation was aborted due to the New York Agreement.
During the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, KKO members Harun Hj Mohd Said and Usman Ali were dispatched to Singapore. They were tasked with sabotaging Malaysian and Singaporean interests. This operation resulted in the MacDonald House bombing. Usman Harun was arrested and sentenced to death by the Singaporean government.
In 1975, the Corps’ name was restored to Korps Marinir. A massive reorganization plan followed.
There was a plan in 1999 to expand the Marine Corps. Each Marine Base would have three combat brigades. These are Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery. They would be supported by one Combat Support Regiment and one Administration Support Regiment. The expansion would create three Kormar bases. These would be in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Rate Island in Lampung.
The 1st Marine Brigade and support elements formed the 1st Marine Forces East in 2001. In 2004, the 2nd Marine Forces West was established. A 3rd division-sized unit was planned for 2018.
The Marine Corps emblem holds deep symbolism. The Black Saber Kris Samudera honors Indonesia’s naval heritage. The relief map on the blue Lotus symbolizes national responsibility. The Gold Anchor with Black Chain acknowledges the Marines’ naval tradition.
